About The Event
Sensei retreats twice a year to intensify her own practice. During that time, the doors of the hermitage are closed for regular classes.
At Hinotori An, the winter Ango 安居 is performed in a semi-traditional way. It currently lasts only 40 days, which is much shorter than the usual Sotoshu Ango (which lasts 90 to 100 days). Unlike the traditional approach, in addition to regular Zen practice, this ango also includes other elements (yoga, qigong, shodo and chado training).
Winter ango begins at 6:30 with the first zazen practice and qigong. This is followed by the samu (作務) period, which is dedicated to cleaning, office work and cooking. An early lunch is taken with gratitude to all existence, which is expressed through the Orioki ritual. After that, the time for studying and further Zen practice begins. This silver thread is interrupted by periods of yoga, shodo practice and various ceremonies. Usually, there will be only one meal a day (early lunch).
Although the traditional length of ango has more benefits, 40 days is still enough to deepen peace and prepare entrance into the winter practice. Winter retreat is an important period during which significant time is devoted to introspection and contemplation. Also, walks in nature, especially when all sounds are muffled under layers of snow, act as a catalyst for unification with all existence.
